The basic premise is this:

After the events of season 2, Stiles feels that he needs to do more with regards to his friends and the supernatural side of things in Beacon Hills. He chooses to become an apprentice of sorts under Deaton.

Things go well, until a spell backfires and he injures his eyes. He's not permanently blinded, but he won't ever have 20/20 vision again.

Below is the ramblely, TL;DR version.

Following the showdown at the warehouse, and with Allison gone for the summer, Stiles should have been spending more time with Scott, right? X-box, lacrosse practice and just chilling while schools out had been the plan, but like all the best laid plans of mice and men, things rarely work out the way they do on paper.

What happens is this: Scott starts to spend more time with Issac - they know there's more trouble coming, even if Issac wasn't too forthcoming about what - and given that Erica and Boyd are missing, it's not like Scott wouldn't try and look for them. Even if he chooses to do so with Issac.

And Stiles, well, he gets it. He's only human after all. (And no, he doesn't need to be a wolf, thank you very much.) He might not have the super-senses or healing abilities, and he may not always keep up, but he can always play to his strengths. He's been dropping in at Deaton's clinic after hours, seeing if the vet has any other lessons to offer. The process has been frustrating, and slow but they're finally past the warnings and cryptic riddles. In fact, he could actually say they're making pretty decent progress.

Good progress that is, until one of his spells backlashed.

Backlash of Magic is when a Spell is either foiled or bungled and the Magic recoils. This usually ends up in the face of the one who cast the Spell, often fatally; but occasionally if the Spell was very large, the Backlash goes on to spray everyone in the vicinity or ever travel in waves across the continent. This can be very dangerous. The Rules state that there is no way of stopping Backlash.

The keywords from the definition being 'in the face', or well eyes. A simple scrying spell gone wrong is keeping him sightless for a good long while. And even when things get to the point where they aren't blurry shapes? It seems like the white iris thing is going to be permanent.

One good thing to come of it - his dad knows about werewolves and other things that go bump in the night now.
